The story of wormwood: from the artists' glass to the medicine of the future
In Europe more than a hundred years ago, it was the most famous drink on the tables of artists and writers. They used to say it opened the doors of imagination for them.
And after nearly a full century, researchers went back to studying the compounds of wormwood, and discovered inside it the compound Artemisinin, a substance able to kill the malaria parasite with extreme precision, which saved millions of lives in Africa and Asia. Even more striking, scientists discovered that this compound targets cancerous cells, and today it is studied as a smart drug against cancer.
In the old books of Arabic medicine, such as The Canon of Medicine by Ibn Sina, and the compendium of medicines and foods by Ibn al-Baytar, wormwood is mentioned as an essential herb for cleansing the stomach of worms, and a powerful antiseptic for the stomach and intestines.
Organic wormwood herb
A natural organic herb with a strong aromatic scent and a distinctive taste, known for its benefits for the digestive and immune systems. It supports the health of the stomach and intestines, helps cleanse the body, and is traditionally used to help expel parasites.
What does wormwood do in your body?
1. In the digestive system and against parasites
When wormwood reaches the intestines, its bitter compounds start to work. The parasites that hide in the intestinal wall, the worms that live off your food, and the fungi that take over the gut environment, all find themselves facing a fierce enemy.
2. Facing abnormal cells
Artemisinin exploits a weakness of cancerous cells in their excessive consumption of iron, so it attacks them from the inside. Here we understand how a wild plant carries within it a "guided bomb" aimed only at the diseased cells.
3. In the immune system
Wormwood doesn't suppress immunity completely, rather it returns it to balance. It reduces the activity of excessive inflammatory pathways, and at the same time strengthens the regulatory cells, which is why it is studied today in advanced research for conditions like Crohn's, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis.
4. In the liver and eliminating toxins
Wormwood's compounds bind to heavy metals like mercury and lead and expel them, which gives the liver extra support in doing its job as the first line of defence against toxins.
5. In the nervous system
Its aromatic compounds affect the GABA receptors in the brain, receptors that calm the nervous system. In controlled doses it may help ease anxiety and sleep disturbances.
